New Training Video – Getting Data to Mobile Apps with Cold Fusion

A new video has just been added to the “Developing with Flash Lite” series – “Getting Data to Mobile Apps with Cold Fusion“. Accessing external data sources from mobile applications is an important aspect of Flash Lite development. With Adobe’s Cold Fusion 9, developers can easily provide database access and server-side functionality to their Flash mobile applications, and in this episode we see just how easy it really is using Flash Lite 3 and Cold Fusion Builder.

I actually started my “developer” years building Allaire Cold Fusion 3.1 web applications and CMS back in the late 90’s, and reading Cold Fusion Web Application Construction Kit books by Ben Forta … ah those were the days :) Since then, I’ve always just stuck with Cold Fusion for back-end development work because it just seemed like an easy language to learrn for “creative” people, and as it and Flash matured (and came under the one roof at Macromedia) they just seemed to fit more and more easily together. Cold Fusion FTW!

Break Design

Over at sgentrepreneurs.com there’s a short interview with Rick Treweek, co-founder at Breakdesign, on their recent Flash mobile work and plans. Rick, Stefan, and the rest of the BD crew have been working with Flash Lite for a very long time now, and have had great success with Dawn of the Fly, the Johnnie Walker Digital PA, and with securing funding through the Open Screen Fund for their upcoming Barking Seed game platform. It’s always great to see business and industry publications giving time to start-up companies in this space – well done Rick.

Check out the interview here, and also BD’s latest product – That Roach Game.

Nokia at Adobe MAX

Nokia have some sessions lined up at Adobe MAX next week to showcase what’s happening on their mobile platforms for Adobe Flash and web platform developers, and also to discuss opportunities such as the Open Screen Fund. The session on Nokia Web Runtime will be espeicially of interest I think to many developers outside the Flash platform, as there have been some great links made with web applications for Nokia devices and Adobe tools such as Dreaweaver (you should also consider that non-Flash-based AIR applications using HTML/JS/CSS aren’t all that too dissimilar to native Nokia Web Runtime widgets … ). Here are the sessions you should add to your agenda:

Building World-Class Multimedia Applications on Nokia Devices
2-3pm Monday 5 October
Room 404A
Presenter: Robert Burdick

Open Screen Project Fund: Fueling the Future of Flash Experiences
5-6 pm Monday 5 October
Room 503
Presenters: Bill Perry and Mark Doherty

Mobile Application Development with Nokia Web Runtime
1:30-2:30 Tuesday 6 October
Room 402A
Presenter: Michael Bierman

There’s also the Open Screen Project Fund Winner’s booth in the exhibit area, where you can see some demos of mobile apps that have been funded so far. Unfortunately our app has only just been funded, so no sneak peeks of Pocket Mogul just yet ;)

Looking forward to meeting as many Flash mobile people as possible next week in LA!

New Training Video – What Can I Make with Flash Lite?

In a slight departure from style of videos so far on the “Developing With Flash Lite” series, this new episode entitled “What Can I Make with Flash Lite?” is something that I hope can become a regular and useful vehicle for the Flash mobile community to have content showcased.

I’ve tried to give a snapshot of some content that has been developed in various categories, such as standalone content, mobile browser and personalisation. Due to the limitations of my current production setup, there’s some content I couldn’t demonstrate at the moment, but I’m planning on how to get around this in the future (particularly as new breeds of applications and content emerge with FP10 and AIR). This video however also serves to highlight some developers and designers, and it’s this coverage which I would like to repeat for others in the Flash mobile community in future editions of this particular title.
